Some of the books that have changed how I see the world weren’t ‘faith’ books at all — just true stories told well. These are the nonfiction reads I press on people.

Unforgettable true stories

Educated by Tara Westover. A woman raised off-grid claws her way to a Cambridge PhD. Astonishing.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. An Olympian’s survival and redemption after a WWII plane crash and POW camp. Gutting and hopeful.

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown. Nine working-class rowers and the 1936 Olympics. Pure heart.

Justice and mercy

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. A lawyer’s fight for the condemned and forgotten. Convicting and deeply human.

The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. The Great Migration told through three lives. A masterpiece.

Wisdom for living

Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. A surgeon on aging, dying, and what actually makes life worth living to the end.

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. Growing up mixed-race under apartheid — funny, sharp, and moving.

The Wager by David Grann. An 18th-century shipwreck, mutiny, and survival. Reads like a thriller, all true.

A last word

A true story told well can shift something in you. Pick one and let it.
