Sometimes you just want a book that won’t let you put it down. These are my go-to thrillers — the ones with a twist you don’t see coming and not a lot you have to skim past.

Twists you won’t see coming

The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. A woman shoots her husband and never speaks again. The ending floored me.

Before I Go to Sleep by S.J. Watson. A woman who forgets everything each night starts to suspect the people around her. Tense.

The Chain by Adrian McKinty. To free your kidnapped child, you must kidnap someone else’s. Relentless.

Smart and gripping

The Guest List by Lucy Foley. A wedding on a remote island, a body, and everyone’s a suspect. Deliciously tense.

No Time for Goodbye by Linwood Barclay. A family vanishes overnight, and decades later the questions resurface. Propulsive.

The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. A journalist witnesses a murder at sea that no one believes happened.

Cozy-leaning suspense

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. Four retirees solve murders between crossword sessions. Clever, warm, and a total delight.

A last word

Pick one, cancel your evening plans, and don’t say I didn’t warn you.
